Mod Headband Tutorial

Today I was really looking forward to starting on the Burda coat that I've been waiting to sew.  I think I may have made a mistake in pre-washing my taffeta so while I try 6 dozen things to try and iron out all the wrinkles that WON'T GO AWAY, here's a headband tutorial.

This is the perfect project for small leftover scraps from other projects.

You will need:

Fabric scraps big enough for the template

Approx. 9 1/4" elastic (I use 1/4" wide)

Cut two different pieces on the fold using the template. You can use two pieces of the same fabric or two contrasting pieces. If you're wanting to be able to wear either side up, avoid using thin or sheer fabrics because your seam allowance will show through on one side.

Place your  9 1/4" long elastic piece on one fabric piece, right side up. The elastic will not reach the other side but this is okay. Your elastic should be sandwiched in between your pieces right sides facing in.

You will want to pin most of the way around, leaving a 2 1/2" gap in the middle on one side, and and the other end where your elastic will be stretched.

Stitch the pieces together making sure to leave 1 gap in the middle to turn it inside out, and one at the end to pin your elastic through.

Then, reach inside and pull your loose elastic end through your gap as seen below. It will wrinkle up the other end, but pin well and it shouldn't be a problem.

Stitch the elastic pulled through the end gap as seen above. The only gap you should have now is the middle 2 1/2 inches on one side to turn it inside out.

Your elastic is now perfectly secured in the ends. All you have to do now is turn the gap seam allowance to the inside, pin carefully, and stitch a 1/4" top stitch around the entire band.

Tip: choose your fabric wisely, some silky fabrics will slide right off of your hair and wont stay on very well. Velvets and felts, or fabrics with more texture will stay on great.
